This week is World Antibiotic Awareness Week. WHO is encouraging all Member States, health partners, students and the public to join the campaign to help raise awareness of antibiotic resistance, with the aim of reducing the global use of antibiotics.

What is antibiotic resistance?

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria alter in ways that make them resistant to antibiotics (WHO, 2016). Antimicrobial resistance - resistance to bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites - is one of the leading threats to public health through out the world.

The Society of Homeopaths advises its members to be fully aware of the implications of global antibiotic resistance and to encourage awareness of this problem within our local communities. We will continue to contribute to wider debates on this topic.

A growing body of evidenced-based research suggests that homeopathy can be used to prevent and treat acute otitis media (ear infections) (Bell & Boyer 2013; Fixsen 2013) and uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infections (Zanasi et al. 2014; Jong et al. 2016; Ramchandani 2010; van Haselen et al. 2016). The society aims to raise awareness of the potential of homeopathy to reduce pain and distress and speed up recovery from uncomplicated infections in the safest and most effective way.
