[post_content] => A campaign has been launched, calling for the creation of a 'sustainable' health system and seeking the backing of organisations across the complementary and alternative health sector.

Led by the Alliance for Natural Health International, it aims to gather support for fresh thinking on how to reduce the burden at primary care level on the NHS, including wider use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

Central to the initiative is the appeal for an individual-centred approach with more emphasis on people taking responsibility for maintaining their own health and a greater level of guidance from professionals to promote healthy behaviours earlier in life.

Other key points include minimising reliance on drugs to treat chronic conditions and non-pharmaceutical approaches to be prioritised, where possible, when treating patients.

The Alliance has produced a draft position paper, A blueprint for health system sustainability in the UK, and  invited other organisations to respond. The paper sets out 10 hallmarks of a sustainable health system focused on individuals' needs and on prevention.

In a foreword to the paper, Rob Verkerk, executive and scientific director of the Alliance, said the paper was not about solving internal problems in the NHS but about what might be done outside it to ease the burden.

"That means getting people into the driving seat of their own health  and dramatically increasing efforts on health, wellbeing and disease prevention at the community level," he said.

The Society of Homeopaths has welcomed the move and is also urging members to respond individually.

"The Society has been keen for some time for there to be a more unified voice from the CAM sector," said Mark Taylor, Chief Executive of the Society . "We will be contributing to the paper and will be engaging with those involved as the ideas develop."
