Christian Taylor : Teens in a digital world – rekindling communication

Christian Taylor RSHom will be joining us live for the winter workshop ‘Teens in a digital world – rekindling communication’ taking place online in November. Christian shares his thoughts on the topic and discusses the content of his workshop presentation.

Researching – ironically much of it done on the internet – my upcoming talk on ‘Teens in a digital world – rekindling communication’ and discovering, unsurprisingly, that there is a lot to read with every possible opinion available. In the end it was my understanding of homeopathic theory that allowed me to thread my way to a more practice friendly position – which I hope to share

While working in Dolphin House Children’s Clinic for 20 years, I was privy to many child-parent interactions, which has, for better or worse, shaped my perspective on the complicated dynamics going on between some parents and their teenage children. It has also meant that I have had to reflect on my own, and others’ experiences as young adults, especially regarding thoughts and feelings when talking to, or dealing with, our parents at that time.

The ongoing inter-generational (lack of) dialogue online is revealing, and helped in me develop a broader view on the communication problems between parents and young adults. As a practitioner, this understanding can help by clarifying which issues belong to the parent-child dynamic and which are those that are patient specific. Separating these can make it much easier to see a remedy for the patient rather than inadvertently prescribing on the relationship problem.  I have a few noteworthy cases to discuss in this regard.

We were all teenagers once, and the key to understanding the problems in communicating with them in part depends on our ability to connect with this aspect still active within ourselves and to hear how we negotiate with or stifle that part of ourselves.

Ultimately, the aim of the talk is to see the issue from a homeopathic perspective – the purpose of which is to maximise the ‘experiential’ response, to reconnect the person with their deeper somatic, natural, drives, allowing them to be present in the moment as their body needs them to be. We will look more closely at the implications of this and how this might help us when we next have an unhappy teenager in our consulting room…

Teens in a digital world – rekindling communication is taking place online on Saturday 29th November.
