In the letter, Society Chief Executive Mark Taylor points out that a recent survey showed that 50% of MEPs' constituents use Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
He highlighted that citizens' health is a core EU priority and, given the evident high demand for CAM, it is clearly time to guarantee patients' equitable access to the CAM treatment of their choice. This is in line with the European Charter of Patients' Rights, which includes the right of access to health services that answer individual patients' health needs, the right to information, the right to personalised treatment and the right to choose freely from different treatment procedures and providers.
Taylor pointed out that, in order for all European citizens' both patients and prescribers, to be guaranteed availability and access to a full range of CAM medicinal products, harmonised regulations and standards should be adopted across the EU. A recent study commissioned by the European Commission had come to the same conclusion but, to date, the Commission had failed to take action.
He called upon MEPs to lobby the Commission to take appropriate action in this area and to support the integration of CAM into the work of the NHS.
