[post_content] => Organisations and campaigning bodies involved in complementary and alternative health are supporting European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) on Sunday (November 18).

The day, organised by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and is backed by the European Commission, highlights the threat to public health of antibiotic resistance and the importance of limiting use of antibiotics where possible.

It features an event at the European Parliament in Brussels and those taking part include the European Council of Homeopaths (ECCH).

Zofia Dymitr, ECCH vice-chair, said: "ECCH will emphasise the role homeopathy can play in strengthening the immune system and treating acute infections. The global antibiotic resistance crisis has seen a shift towards preventative healthcare as well as an integrative approach to care. ECCH continues to promote homeopathy as a safe and viable treatment option."

Eurocam, which promotes the contribution of complementary and alternative medicine to better health, has also published a paper highlighting the role that complementary and alternative medicine can play in tackling antimicrobial resistance which is published on the main EAAD website.

"CAM therapies by their individualised holistic approach and focus on assisting each person’s innate self-healing and health-maintaining capacity, can make a significant contribution to reducing AMR, both in the healthcare sector and in animal husbandry," it says.
