Since the Society of Homeopaths was formed in 1978 we have worked hard to raise political awareness and recognition of the homeopathic profession.
As a regulatory body, the Society maintains a register for homeopaths who meet its professional standards. Homeopaths registering with the Society agree to practise in accordance with our Code of Ethics and Practice, the National Occupational Standards and the Core Criteria.
We operate a system for recognition of courses educating professional practitioners; we have clear criteria for registration together with an initial registration process based on continuing professional development; and we have a system for supporting and recording members’ continuing professional development.
The Professional Standards Committee oversees the regulatory aspects of the Society’s activities. This committee includes two Board members and two lay members, appointed for their particular areas of expertise and to represent patients’ interests, together with senior staff responsible for education, registration and professional conduct.
Society of Homeopaths register accredited by Professional Standards Authority
We are very pleased to announce that the Society of Homeopaths’ register has been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA), under its Accredited Registers (AR) scheme.
Homeopaths on the Society’s register will be able to display the Accredited Register quality mark, a sign that they belong to a register which meets the Professional Standards Authority’s robust standards. (Note to members – guidance about the use of this logo is available in the members’ section of the Society’s website).
The quality mark will give extra peace of mind for anyone looking for a homeopath, letting them know that anyone who holds the mark is committed to the high standards of the Society of Homeopaths.
RSHoms may now use the sentence: ‘I am on a register that has been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority’ on their websites and in other practice communications, explaining that this demonstrates their commitment to high professional standards, to enhancing safety and delivering a better service.
This accreditation offers members of the public enhanced protection, as they now have the option of seeking homeopathic treatment from a practitioner on a register that has been vetted and approved by an independent body, accountable to the UK parliament.
Accreditation means that the Society has met the Authority’s demanding standards in the following areas: governance, setting standards, education and training, managing the register, providing information and dealing with complaints.
Accredited Registration is different from statutory professional regulation because it is voluntary, not compulsory. Practitioners can work in homeopathy without being on a register.
Accreditation does not imply that the Authority has assessed the merits of individuals on the register. This remains the responsibility of the Society of Homeopaths.
As the scheme develops, accredited registers will encompass a wide range of occupations and organisations, and the Professional Standards Authority may accredit more than one register in any particular occupation.
